Jobs distribution over CPUs

Hi, I have a very simple computing farm on a single PC with AMD Ryzen 7950X (2x16 cores). I have configured my slurm to use up to 25 CPUs: NodeName=palmer CPUs=25 RealMemory=40000 State=UNKNOWN # Boards=1 SocketsPerBoard=1 CoresPerSocket=16 ThreadsPerCore=2 PartitionName=main Nodes=ALL Default=YES MaxTime=INFINITE State=UP But using htop I see that with all 25 jobs running I use max 16 cores. It seems that like * 6 jobs are using 100% of CPU * 20 jobs use 50% CPU each I use slurm 24.05.2, but I am pretty sure in the past when using I think one of 22.x version, the jobs distribution was like 25 CPUs for 25 jobs with 100% each. Is there anything I can do in the configuration of my farm to have better utilisation of CPU cores? Right now like half of them is not really used. Regards, Rafał

Dear All, May I have your suggestion in my issue facing, While the job is launched using "salloc -N4--mem 4000 -p active" I find the job is running in the one compute node and the other 3 machines are free, I don`t find the job is distributed evenly, May I have your suggestion, I do squeue /scontrol to find the job distribution and it displays the 4 machines but when I check on the respective machines I don`t find the job running only one machine takes the whole node, Is there any issue in my conf file or what needs to be done, May I have your suggestion pls. FYI, salloc -N4 --mem 4000 -p active [cid:image001.png@01DAE8B4.215FBA50] While using TOP, I find only Debussy is used heavily, I don`t find my job is evenly distributed, May I have your guidance pls. Optimizing CPU socket affinities and NVLink

Hello, I've recently adopted setting AutoDetect=nvml in our GPU nodes' gres.conf files to automatically populate Cores and Links for GPUs, which has been working well. I'm now wondering if I can prioritize having single GPU jobs scheduled on NVLink pairs (these are PCIe A6000s) where one of the GPUs in the pair is already running a single GPU job, assuming the CPU socket with affinity has enough cores to handle the job. We have some users wanting to run single GPU jobs and others wanting to run dual GPU jobs, both on the same nodes, so we would prefer not to configure each NVLink pair as a single GRES, for better job throughput. As is, I've observed that for a node with at least 4 GPUs and 2 sockets (one NVLink pair per socket), Slurm will prioritize evening out core allocation between the sockets. Once the second single GPU job is submitted, one GPU in each NVLink pair is taken up and a subsequent dual GPU job can still run, but doesn't have access to an NVLink pair. We've also got a few nodes where single GPUs have failed, resulting in some NVLink'd pairs and usually a single non-NVLink'd GPU (3 or 7 total GPUs). It'd be ideal if single GPU jobs also got prioritized for scheduling on the non-NVLink'd GPU in this case. Is this possible? Integrate podman to run containers

Hello, I have a test cluster consist of two nodes, one as controller and the other as compute node. I test again the oci run time on both controller and compute nodes and I think might be helpful to mention two points: the delete command will not work because if you kill the container then there is no resource to be deleted at least in my tests. there is no pause and resume in oci.conf but I test them and got the same error for freezer support and cgroup permissions.

Find out submit host of past job?

Hello everyone, I've grepped the manual pages and crawled the 'net, but couldn't find any answer to the following problem: I can see that the ctld keeps a record of it below /var/spool/slurm - as long as the job is running or waiting (and shown by "squeue") - and that this stores the environment that contains SLURM_SUBMIT_HOST - but this information seems to be lost when the job finishes. Is there a way to find out what the value of SLURM_SUBMIT_HOST was? I'd be interested in a few more env variables, but this one should be sufficient for a start... Is "sacct" just lacking a job field, or is this info indeed dropped and not stored in the DB? I keep getting this logged on my Slurm control host: [2024-08-06T20:31:40.196] error: slurm_auth_get_host: Lookup failed: Unknown host I don't see an identifiable pattern and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. The jobs being submitted at or around that time seem fine and nobody's complained about their jobs not running, so I can't track down a bad or nonexistent DNS record. Chris

Hello, When I am running this command: `salloc --nodelist=gpu03 -p A4500_Features --gres=gpu:1` and then automatically ssh to the job, what should I see when I run nvidia-smi? All the GPUs in the host or just a single one? Thanks

Upgrade node while jobs running

Isn't this failure familiar to anyone? When I ask API endpoint "localhost:6820/slurm/v0.0.41/jobs", slurmrestd segrafults with unsorted double linked list corrupted. Anyone using this API endpoint without segfaulting? Slurm versions 24.05.2, 23.11.9, and 23.02.8 are now available and include a fix for a recently discovered security issue with the switch plugins. SchedMD customers were informed on July 17th and provided a patch on request; this process is documented in our security policy. [1] For the switch/hpe_slingshot and switch/nvidia_imex plugins, a user could override the isolation between Slingshot VNIs or IMEX channels. If you do not have one of these switch plugins configured, then you are not impacted by this issue. It is unclear what, if any, information could be accessed with access to an unauthorized channel. This disclosure is being made out of an abundance of caution. If you do have one of these plugins enabled, the slurmctld must be restarted before the slurmd daemons to avoid disruption. Convergence of Kube and Slurm?

Bright Cluster Manager has some verbiage on their marketing site that they can manage a cluster running both Kubernetes and Slurm. Maybe I misunderstood it. But nevertheless, I am encountering groups more frequently that want to run a stack of containers that need private container networking. What’s the current state of using the same HPC cluster for both Slurm and Kube? Note: I’m aware that I can run Kube on a single node, but we need more resources. So ultimately we need a way to have Slurm and Kube exist in the same cluster, both sharing the full amount of resources and both being fully aware of resource usage. Thanks, Daniel Healy

Slurm fails before nvidia-smi command

Hi there all, We have Dell server with 2 x Nvidia H100 and running slurm on it. After restart server if we do not write nvidia-smi command slurm fails. When we run nvidia-smi && systemctl restart slurmd && systemctl restart slurmctld , slurm queue begins. Background tasks in Slurm scripts?

Good morning, yesterday I came across a Slurm (sbatch) script that, after doing some stuff in the foreground, runs another executable in the background - and doesn't "wait" for it to finish - literally the last line of the script is executable & (and that executable is supposed to take several 10 seconds or more to finish) How would Slurm handle this? Will the end of the script immediately trigger the job epilog, and what would happen to the leftover task? This certainly is discussed somewhere in the manual pages and other documentation but up to now I failed to find that place... API - Specify GPUs

Good Afternoon All, It does not seem that the REST API allows for folks to configure their jobs to utilize GPUs, using the traditional methods. IE, there does not appear to be an equivalent between the --gpus (or --gres) flag on sbatch/srun and the REST API's job submission endpoint. Hi, I am trying to set up Slurm with GPUs as GRES on a 3 node configuration (hostnames: server1, server2, server3). For a while everything looked fine and I was able to run srun --label --nodes=3 hostname which is what I use to test if Slurm is working correctly, and then it randomly stops. Turns out slurmctld is not working and it throws the following error (the two lines are consecutive in the log file): root@server1:/var/log# grep -i error slurmctld.log [2024-07-22T14:47:32.302] error: Error binding slurm stream socket: Address already in use[2024-07-22T14:47:32.302] fatal: slurm_init_msg_engine_port error Address already in use This error is being thrown after having made no changes to the config files, in fact the cluster wasn't used at all for a few weeks before this error was thrown. The other question I have is regarding the configuration of a GPU as a GRES - how do I verify that it has been configured correctly? Hello, I am configuring cgroups on my server for the first time. I've created a cgroup.conf file in the Slurm directory with the following values: ConstrainCores=yes ConstrainRAMSpace=yes ConstrainSwapSpace=yes AllowedRAMSpace=90 AllowedSwapSpace=10 I feel like this configuration might be incomplete. Can anyone provide assistance? I haven't found any specific guidance online. Thanks!

Custom Plugin Integration

Hello, We wish to have a schedulingintegration with Slurm. Our own application has a backend system which willdecide the placement of jobs across hosts & CPU cores. The backend takesits own time to come back with a placement (which may take a few seconds) & we expect slurm to update it regularly about any change in the current state ofavailable resources. For this we believe we have 3 options broadly: - We use the const_tres Select plugin & modify it to let it query our backend system for job placements. - We write our own Select plugin avoiding any other Select plugin. - We use existing select plugin & also register our own plugin. Idea is that our plugin will cater to 'our' jobs (specific partition, say) while all other jobs would be taken up by the default plugin. Problem with a> is that this leads to modification ofexisting plugin code & calling (our) library code from inside Select pluginlib. With b> the issue is unless we have the full Slurm cluster toourselves this isn't viable. Any insight how to proceed with this? Where shouldour select plugin, assuming we need to make one, fits in the slurm integration. We are not sure whether c> is allowed in Slurm. We went through existing Select plugins Linear & cons_tres.However, not able to figure out how to use them or write something on similarlines to suit our purpose. CLOUD nodes with unknown IP addresses

I've read the following in the slurm power saving docs: https://slurm.schedmd.com/power_save.html > *cloud_dns* > By default, Slurm expects that the network addresses for cloud nodes won't be known until creation of the node and that Slurm will be notified of the node's address upon registration. Since Slurm communications rely on the node configuration found in the slurm.conf, Slurm will tell the client command, after waiting for all nodes to boot, each node's IP address. However, in environments where the nodes are in DNS, this step can be avoided by configuring this option. > I am creating the nodes on demand and don't know the IP ahead of the instance start, so cloud_dns is not set. I'm confused specifically by "Slurm will be notified of the node's address upon registration." Who/what is expected to do this? If it is expected to be performed by the ResumeProgram, does it need to be done before slurmd starts on the node? Is it OK if the node does it after slurmd has started with something like: scontrol update nodename=$(hostname -s) nodeaddr=$(hostname -I) nodehostname=$(hostname) scontrol reconfigure Thank you, Martin

Slurm Users cannot open gui login nodes with X11 without logging into the Compute node.

Hello 1 Login Server I have a total of 3 calculation nodes. Especially in non-GUI jobs, I can run scripts successfully with Slurm sbatch. However, when it is with Gui, I run it with X11. However, my problem for now is this: When I run sbatch gui.sh, it runs smoothly and automatically selects the calculation node and gui is active on the login server. But the node it selects must be logged in with the same user for x11 to work. How can I run the application with gui on the login node without logging in on the calculation node? The calculation node gives the following error when I run the script without logging in. How can I solve this problem. srun: error: Ignoring --x11 option for a job step within an existing job. Nodes TRES double what is requested

Hi, We are running slurm 23.02.6. Our nodes have hyperthreading disabled and we have slurm.conf set to CPU=32 for each node (each node has 2 processes with 16 cores). When we allocated a job, such as salloc -n 32, it will allocate a whole node but using sinfo shows double the allocation in the TRES=64. It also shows in sinfo that the node has 4294967264 idle CPUs. Not sure if its a known bug, or an issue with our config? I have tried various things, like setting the sockets/boards in slurm.conf. Thanks Jack

SLURM noob administrator question

Still learning about SLURM, so please forgive me if I ask a naïve question I like to use Anders Halager’s gnodes command to visualise the state of our nodes. I’ve noticed lately that we fairly often see things like this (apologies for line wrap): +- core - 46 cores & 186GB -----------------------------------------+-------------------------------------------------------------------+-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | seskscpn301 0G ___OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO | seskscpn309 172G ..........................................!!!! | seskscpn317 0G OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO | Now, you can see in this that nodes 301 and 317 are more or less fully loaded. This is great. But 309 is in an interesting state. Four overloaded cores, and all other cores unused, and plenty of RAM available. And yet SLURM is not scheduling any more work to that node. Right now there are more than 2000 jobs pending, many of which could run on that node. But SLURM is not scheduling them, and I don’t know why. One thing I’ve seen cause this is a job trying to use more CPUs than it has been allocated. The cgroup stops this being a real problem of course, but it does cause the load average to go high. Is this what’s causing SLURM to stop sending anything to the node? Is there a configuration change that might help in this situation? Replacing MUNGE with SACK (auth/slurm)

Does SACK replace MUNGE? As in - MUNGE is not required when building Slurm or on compute? If so, can the Requires and BuildRequires for munge be made optional on bcond_without_munge in the spec file? Or is there a reason MUNGE must remain a hard require for Slurm? Thanks, --Dani_L.

Temporarily bypassing pam_slurm_adopt.so

Hi, all. We have a use case where we need to allow a group of users (members of an LDAP group, which I can easily add to a Linux group) to SSH to a compute node, without disabling pam_slurm_adopt.so. Is there a way to do this? We can add users to the sudo group, which will bypass pam_slurm_adopt.so, but we do not want to grant sudo access to these users. Is there any way to bypass for a group of users, pam_slurm_adopt.so without removing it from /etc/pam.d/sshd, and without adding them to the sudo group? Thanks. Daniel

Hello Everyone, We tried several version of slurm 23-x (till the last one: 23.11.8), and we observe a memory leak in slurmctld in addition to a bad response time (sometimes). It seems to be due to a slurm.conf configuration with Partition containing Allowgroups option. Is it a known problem? Is it recommended to use the version 22, or 24 ? Can SLURM queue different jobs to start concurrently?

Hi there, I've received a question from an end user, which I presume the answer is "No", but would like to ask the community first. Scenario: The user wants to create a series of jobs that all need to start at the same time. Example: there are 10 different executable applications which have varying CPU and RAM constraints, all of which need to communicate via TCP/IP. Of course the user could design some type of idle/statusing mechanism to wait until all jobs are *randomly *started, then begin execution, but this feels like a waste of resources. The complete execution of these 10 applications would be considered a single simulation. The goal would be to distribute these 10 applications across the cluster and not necessarily require them all to execute on a single node. Is there a good architecture for this using SLURM? I'm confused. Why can't they just use a multi-node job, and have the job script farm out the individual tasks to the various workers through some mechanism (srun, mpirun, ssh, etc.)? AFAIK, there's nothing preventing a job from using resources on multiple hosts. The job just needs to have some way of pushing the work out to those hosts. Trying to use rpmbuild on Rocky9 Linux, Slurm 21.08 - I want to build with cgroups/v2 support and have these installed: libbpf-devel.x86_64 2:1.3.0-2.el9 dbus-devel.x86_64 1:1.12.20-8.el9 kernel-headers.x86_64 5.14.0-427.22.1.el9_4 hwloc-devel.x86_64 2.4.1-5.el9 In https://slurm.schedmd.com/cgroup_v2.html it says: Requirements For building cgroup/v2 there are two required libraries checked at configure time... Look at your config.log when configuring to see if they were correctly detected on your system. I don't see any mention of 'ebpf', 'bpf', or 'dbus' when I grep through ~/rpmbuild/BUILD/slurm-21.08.8-2/config.log. Before I noticed that, I installed the RPMS on my cluster and get cgroup errors when I try to run a job or get an allocation. The slurmctld and slurmd processes start up fine on the servers, and I have a generic /etc/slurm/cgroup.conf. It seems like the cgroups plugin isn't getting built right with rpmbuild- how do I troubleshoot? Thanks Chris

Run a program via Strigger when a node joins the cluster

Hi, We have a requirement to run a specific program whenever any new node joins the slurm cluster. For this, we have tried using strigger with the following options : "strigger --set --node --up --flags=perm --program=<program>" We see that the trigger is not getting activated always. Checked slurmctld logs for "type=node:up" and noticed it is not always happening. Based on documentation at https://slurm.schedmd.com/strigger.html , "up" flag would mean Trigger an event if the specified node is returned to service from a DOWN state 1. From Slurm Workload Manager - Slurm Power Saving Guide , and the above message does it mean that a node has to be already in DOWN state in the cluster for a trigger with "--up" to get activated ? 2. SLURM QoS Preemption Not Functioning as Expected

Hi all; I'm testing slurm preempt with PreemptType=preempt/qos and PreemptMode=suspend,gang in slurm.conf. But job with high-qos not preempt the job with low-qos. My configuration followed: slurm version: 23.11.4 test node : 8 CPUS and 8GB RAM QoS Configuration:  Partition Configuration:  Job Submission: I submitted test jobs, one with --qos=low-qos and--partition=low , resources 4 CPUs, 4GB memory, and later, a  job  with --qos=high-qos and  --partition=g1 requesting more resources( 5 CPUs, 5GB memory). Did anyone else encounter this issue or any additional steps I might need to take to correctly enable QoS-based preemption in our SLURM setup. Best regards, Liyar

scontrol update job=... comment=... fails with "Job is no longer pending"

Dear Slurm community, we are running 23.02.7. For a small fraction of jobs we get "Job is no longer pending execution for job <JOBID>" when running "scontrol update job=JOBID comment=SOME-COMMENT" on an already running job. For the majority (I guess 98%) of running jobs, this works perfectly fine. I also see no reason why updating the comment of a running job should not be allowed. Did anyone else observe this issue or are there explanations why this might be expected? (We abuse the comment field to track which GPUs within a node are assigned to a job as we did not find any option within Slurm to get the GPU IDs of assigned GPUs but we need that information for our monitoring framework.) How to exclude master from computing? Set to DRAINED?

Dear Slurm users, in our project we exclude the master from computing before starting Slurmctld. We used to exclude the master from computing by simply not mentioning it in the configuration i.e. just not having: PartitionName=SomePartition Nodes=master or something similar. Apparently, this is not the way to do this as it is now a fatal error fatal: Unable to determine this slurmd's NodeName therefore, my *question:* What is the best practice for excluding the master node from work? I personally primarily see the option to set the node into DOWN, DRAINED or RESERVED. Since we use ReturnToService=2, I guess DOWN is not the way to go. RESERVED fits with the second part "The node is in an advanced reservation and *not generally available*." and DRAINED "The node is unavailable for use per system administrator request." fits completely. So is *DRAINED* the correct setting in such a case? Best regards, Xaver

First machine is both a controller and a node while the 2nd machine is just a node. On both machines, I built the Slurm debian package as per the Slurm docs instructions. Can Not Use A Single GPU for Multiple Jobs

I have a machine with a quad-core CPU and an Nvidia GPU with 3500+ cores. I want to run around 10 jobs in parallel on the GPU (mostly are CUDA based jobs). PROBLEM: Each job asks for only 100 shards (runs usually for a minute or so), then I should be able to run 3500/100 = 35 jobs in parallel but slurm runs only 4 jobs in parallel keeping the rest in the queue. How can I tell the OS that was used to build SLURM?

We're seeing SLURM mis-behaving on one of your clusters, that runs Ubuntu 22.04. Ampng other problems, we see an error-message regarding a missing library version that would have been shipped on Ubuntu 20.04 not 22.04. It's not clear that the library is being called from a SLURM component or OpenMPI or something else. I'm able to read some of the SLURM configuration settings, but is there a way to tell what OS had been used to build it? I imagine that the build-log would show some system-detection steps that would expose that, but don't know if it's bundled with the rest of the SLURM install somewhere.

Hello, I'd like to ask if there is any safe method to rename an existing slurm user to new username with the same uid? As for linux itself, it's quite common to have 2 user share the same uid. So if we already have 2 system users, for example Bob(uid=1500) and HPCBob(uid=1500), and the HPCBob is the existing slurm user, how can we rename it to Bob without lost of user's history job records or associations? Do we have to manually edit the slurm database?

Hello, I wanted help with a problem I have. I just updated my operation system and the slurmdbd and slurmctld is not working anymore. I get this Errors: slurmdbd: fatal: Database schema is too old for this version of Slurm to upgrade. slurmctld: fatal: Can not recover last_tres state, incompatible version, got 9472 need >= 9728 <= 10240,start with '-i' to ignore this. Hello, What I’m looking for is a way for a node to continue to be in the same partition, and have the same QoS(es), but only be chosen if a particular capability is being asked for. This is because we are rolling something (OS upgrade) out slowly to a small batch of nodes at first, and then more and more over time, and do not want to interrupt users’ workflows: we want them to default the ‘current’ nodes and only land on the ‘special’ ones if requested. (At a certain point the ‘special’ ones will become the majority and we’d swap the behaviour.) Slurm has the well-known feature item that can be put on a node(s): > A comma-delimited list of arbitrary strings indicative of some characteristic associated with the node. There is no value or count associated with a feature at this time, a node either has a feature or it does not. A desired feature may contain a numeric component indicating, for example, processor speed but this numeric component will be considered to be part of the feature string. Features are intended to be used to filter nodes eligible to run jobs via the --constraintargument. By default a node has no features. Also see Gres for being able to have more control such as types and count. Using features is faster than scheduling against GRES but is limited to Boolean operations. https://slurm.schedmd.com/slurm.conf.html#OPT_Features So if there are (a bunch of) partitions, and nodes with-in those partitions, a job can be submitted to a partition and it can be run any any available node, or even be requested to run a particular node (--nodelist). With the above (and --constraint / --prefer), a particular sub-set of node(s) can be requested. But (AIUI) that sub-set is also available generally to everyone, even if a particular feature is not requested. Is there a way to tell Slurm to not schedule a job on a node UNLESS a flag or option is set? Or is it necessary to set up new partition(s) or QoS(es)? I see that AllowAccounts (and AllowGroups) is applicable only to Partitions, and not (AFAICT) on a per node basis. We’re currently on 22.05.x, but upgrading is fine. Regards, David

Hello, per documentation, it is possible to run slurm on non systemd system with IgnoreSystemd=yes in cgroup.conf. Hi, because of my real scenario (in mi first post I explained my testing scenario), with several differents users of differents types (researchers, university students and/or teachers, etc), I have distributed my GPUs in 3 differents partitions: * PartitionName=cuda-staff.q Nodes=gpu-[1-4] OverSubscribe=No MaxTime=INFINITE State=UP AllocNodes=node[0-22],node-login,node-login-bak AllowGroups=caos,profesor * PartitionName=cuda-int.q Nodes=gpu-[2,4] OverSubscribe=No MaxTime=30:00 State=UP AllocNodes=node[0-22] * PartitionName=cuda-ext.q Nodes=gpu-[1,3] OverSubscribe=No MaxTime=30:00 State=UP AllocNodes=node[0-22],node-login,node-login-bak Explanation: * In “cuda-staff.q”, only teachers could submit and they can submit from each lab node or each login node. * In “cuda-int.q” everybody can submit, but only from lab nodes. * In “cuda-ex.q” everybody can also submit, but in this case, from lab nodes and login nodes. Since now, I have not used “QoS”... but I’m going to install a new data/user server and I want to reconfigure SLURM. If I distributed GPUs in the way that Gerhard Strangar explains (both similar RTX3080) in a partition with restricted QoS and all other GPUs in other partition, some GPUs that now are restricted for “inside lab user” will be accessible from “outside lab user”. So I think (all teachers want this way ☹ ) I must have these partitions distribution. However, if I apply a QoS limiting only one GPU in each partition. it woulb be possible that a user could user one RTX3080 from outside lab and the other RTX3080 from inside lab… and this is what I want to deny. I will reread documentation. All help will be appreciated, of course!!!! Thanks.

Hi, I am building a containerized Slurm cluster with Ubuntu 20.04 and have it almost working. Limit GPU depending on type

Hello, I would like to know if it would be possible to limit, using "sacctmgr", use of a certain type of GPU according the name I have assigned in "gres.conf" file. For example, my small cluster has 3 GPUs nodes sharing 2 GPUs each one. Two of that GPUs are the same model but they are located in different servers. Because of my scenario, I would like to limit users to user only one of that GPU type and not allowing to use both of them. For example: * gpu-node-1: * GTX1080 * RTX3080 * gpu-node-2: * GTX750 * GTX680 * gpu-node-3: * RTX2070 * RTX3080 What I want is users could user all of them but simultaniously, a user only could use one of the RTX3080. Using QoS I have created a new "qos" with "sacctmgr add qos test-gpu-limit MaxTRESPerUser=gres/gpu=1", but with this new QoS, users are limited to use only one GPU, even they need to use different GPUs models. I have tried with "sacctmgr add qos test-gpu-limit MaxTRESPerUser=gres/gpu:RTX3080:1" but system returns this error "sacctmgr: error: slurmdb_format_tres_str: no TRES id found for gres/gpu:RTX3080:1". So, could be possible to apply limits I want to apply? srun hostname - Socket timed out on send/recv operation

I have two machines. When I run "srum hostname" on one machine (it's both a controller and a node) then I get the hostname fine but I get socket timed out error in these two situations: 1) "srun hostname" on 2nd machine (it's a node) 2) "srun -N 2 hostname" on controller "scontrol show node" shows both mach2 and mach4. "sinfo" shows both nodes too. Also the job gets stuck forever in CG state after the error. Hello, Previously we were running 22.05.10 and could submit a "multinode" job using only the total number of cores to run, not the number of nodes. For example, in a cluster containing only 40-core nodes (no hyperthreading), Slurm would determine two nodes were needed with only: sbatch -p multinode -n 80 --wrap="...." Now in 23.02.1 this is no longer the case - we get: sbatch: error: Batch job submission failed: Node count specification invalid At least -N 2 is must be used (-n 80 can be added) sbatch -p multinode -N 2 -n 80 --wrap="...." Issue about selecting cpus for optimization

Hi, We have 16 nodes cluster with DGX-A100 (80 GB). We have 128 cores of each node separated in to a separate partition for cpu only jobs and 8 GPUs and 128 cores in other partitions for cpugpu jobs. We want to ensure that only selected 128 cores should be part of the cpu partition. (NUMA / Symmetry) for optimization. How to achieve it? cores parameter in gres.conf help? Regards, Purvesh

scontrol create partition fails

Hi, I need to temporarily dedicated one of our compute nodes to a single account. To do this, I was going to create a new partition but I'm running into an error where scontrol create partition outputs "scontrol: error: Invalid input: partition Request aborted" regardless of what parameters I give it. As far as I can tell, this should be allowed; the man page for scontrol has a whole section titled "Partitions - Specficiations for Create, Update, and Delete Commands". What am I missing? Also, is there a better way to approach this? This is really just a one or two day thing and I'm a little surprised there's no easy way to cordon off a node for a user or a project without spinning up an entire partition. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have been lurking here for a while hoping to see some examples that would help but have not fit several months We have a slurm system setup for xilnix FPGA builds (hdl) I want to use this for sw builds too What I seem to see is slurm talks about cpus, GPUs and memory etc I am looking for a “run my make file (or shell script) on any available node” In our case we have 3 top level jobs A B and C These can all run in parallel and are independent (ie bootloader, linux kernel, and the Linux root file system via buildroot) Job A (boot) is actually about 7 small builds that are independent I am looking for a means to fork n jobs (ie job A B and C above) across the cluster and wait/collect the std output of those n jobs and the exit status Job A would then fork and build 7 to 8 sub jobs When they are done it would assemble the result into what Xilinix calls boot.bin Job B is a Linux kernel build Job C is buildroot so there are several (n=50) smaller builds ie bash, busybody, and other tools like python for the target agian each of these can be executed in parallel Really do not (cannot) re architect my build to be a slurm only build because it also need to be able to run without slurm ie build everything on my laptop without slurm present In that case the jobs would run serially and take an hour or so the hope is by parallelizing the sw build jobs our overall cycle time will improve It would also be nice if the slurm cluster would adapt to the available nodes automatically Our hope is we can run our lab pcs as duel boot they normally boot windows but we can duel boot them into Linux and they become a compile node and auto join the cluster and the cluster sees them as going off line when somebody reboots the machine back to windows Sent from my iPhone

cpu distribution question

All, I have a very simple slurm cluster. It's just a single system with 2 sockets and 16 cores in each socket. I would like to be able to submit a simple task into this cluster, and to have the cpus assigned to that task allocated round robin across the two sockets. Everything I try is putting all the cpus for this single task on the same socket. I have not specified any CpuBind options in the slurm.conf file. For example, if I try $ srun -c 4 --pty bash I get a shell prompt on the system, and can run $ taskset -cp $$ pid 12345 current affinity list: 0,2,4,6 and I get this same set of cpus no matter what options I try (the cluster is idle with no tasks consuming slots). I've tried various srun command line options like: --hint=compute_bound --hint=memory_bound various --cpubind options -B 2:2 -m block:cyclic and block:fcyclic Note that if I try to allocation 17 cpus, then I do get the 17th cpu allocated on the 2nd socket. What magic incantation is needed to get an allocation where the cpus are chosen round robin across the sockets? Thank you! Alan

Hi All, I am having trouble calculating the real RSS memory usage by some kind of users' jobs. Which the sacct returned wrong numbers. Rocky Linux release 8.5, Slurm 21.08 (slurm.conf) ProctrackType=proctrack/cgroup JobAcctGatherType=jobacct_gather/linux The troubling jobs are like: 1. python spawn multithreading 96 threads; 2. Each thread uses SKlearn which again spawns 96 threads using openmp. Which is obviously over running the node, and I want to address it. The node has 300GB RAM, but the "sacct" (and seff) reports 1.2TB MaxRSS(also AveRSS). This does not look correct. I am suspecting that whether the SLurm+jobacct_gather/linux repeatedly sums up the memory used by all these threads, multiple counted the same thing many times. For the openMP part, maybe it is fine for slurm; while for python/multithreading, maybe it can not work well with Slurm for memory accounting? So, if this is the case, maybe 1.2TB/96= 12GB MaxRSS? All, When the slurm daemon is sending out emails, they are coming from “slurm(a)servername.subdomain.domain.edu<mailto:slurm@servername.subdomain.domain.edu>”. This has worked okay in the past, but due to a recent mail server change (over which I have no control whatsoever) this will no longer work. Now, the From: address is going to have to be something like “slurm-servername(a)domain.xn--edu-9o0a , or, at least something that ends in “(a)domain.xn--edu-9o0a (the subdomain being present will cause it to get rejected by the mail server. I am not seeing in the documentation how to change the “From:” address tha slurm uses. So the squeue issue was resolved and was due to the partition being hidden. Unhiding it solves the problem. However, the ssh issue remains (looks like both were separate issues). The pam_slurm_adopt is working on all the other nodes but not on the new ones. Any idea how to solve this? As admin on the cluster, we do not observe any issue on our newly added gpu nodes. However, for regular users, they are not seeing their jobs running on these gpu nodes when running squeue -u <username> ( it is however showing as running status with sacct) and they are not able to ssh to these newly added nodes when they have a running job on it. I am not sure if these 2 are related (not being to ssh to mgpu node with a running job on it and not listing a job with squeue for a user on the same node). JWKS File Update - Reread File

diagnosing why interactive/non-interactive job waits are so long with State=MIXED

At the moment we have 2 nodes that are having long wait times. Generally this is when the nodes are fully allocated. What would be the other reasons if there is still enough available memory and CPU available, that a job would take so long? Slurm version is 23.02.4 via Bright Computing. Note the compute nodes have hyperthreading enabled but that should be irrelevant. Tracking GPU utilization with sacct

Hi all, I’m trying to pull (and understand) some GPU usage metrics for historical purposes, and dug into sacct’s TRES reporting a bit. We have AccountingStorageTRES=gres/gpu set in slurm.conf so we do see gres/gpuutil and gres/gpumem numbers available, but I’m struggling to find Slurm-side documentation that describes the units of these values. In looking at the code for gpu_nvml.c it seems the “nvmlDeviceGetProcessUtilization” function is being used and returns units in percentages, but I’m lost on the rest of the calculation. Does anyone know if these units are percentages, and how they are calculated for the final job record, especially wrt multi-GPU jobs with a bunch of processes/moving parts? For context I’ve been looking at TRESUsageInTot and TRESUsageInAve so far. sbatch and --nodes

its friday and i'm either doing something silly or have a misconfig somewhere, i can't figure out which when i run sbatch --nodes=1 --cpus-per-task=1 --array=1-100 --output test_%A_%a.txt --wrap 'uname -n' sbatch doesn't seem to be adhering to the --nodes param. when i look at my output files it's spreading them across more nodes. in the simple case above it's 50/50, but if i through a random sleep in, it'll be more. and if i expand the array it'll use even more nodes. i'm using con/tres and have cr_core_memory,cr_one_core_per_task set

Hi Sean, I appear to be having the same issue that you are having with OCI container jobs running forever / appearing to hang. I haven't figured it out yet, but perhaps we can compare notes and determine what aspect of configuration we both share. Like you, I was following the examples in https://slurm.schedmd.com/containers.html and originally encountered the issue with an alpine container image running the `uptime` command, but I have also confirmed the issue with other images including ubuntu and with other processes. I always get the same results - the container process runs to completion and exits, but then the slurm job continues to run until it is cancelled or killed. I have slurm v23.11.6 and am using the nvidia-container-runtime, what slurm version and runtime are you using? slurmdbd not connecting to mysql (mariadb)

Hi everyone I am trying to get slurmdbd to run on my local home server but I am really struggling. manually running it through sudo slurmdbd -D /path/to/conf is very quick on my fresh install trying to start the slurmdbd through systemctl take 3 minutes and then crashes and fail Is there an alternative to systemctl to start the slurmdbd in the background ? But most importantly I wanted to know why it takes so long through systemctl. Maybe I can increase the timeout limit ? Slurm version 24.05.0 is now available

We are pleased to announce the availability of Slurm 24.05.0. To highlight some new features in 24.05: - Isolated Job Step management. Enabled on a job-by-job basis with the --stepmgr option, or globally through SlurmctldParameters=enable_stepmgr. - Federation - Allow for client command operation while SlurmDBD is unavailable. - New MaxTRESRunMinsPerAccount and MaxTRESRunMinsPerUser QOS limits. - New USER_DELETE reservation flag. - New Flags=rebootless option on Features for node_features/helpers which indicates the given feature can be enabled without rebooting the node. - Cloud power management options: New "max_powered_nodes=<limit>" option in SlurmctldParamters, and new SuspendExcNodes=<nodes>:<count> syntax allowing for <count> nodes out of a given node list to be excluded. - StdIn/StdOut/StdErr now stored in SlurmDBD accounting records for batch jobs. - New switch/nvidia_imex plugin for IMEX channel management on NVIDIA systems. - New RestrictedCoresPerGPU option at the Node level, designed to ensure GPU workloads always have access to a certain number of CPUs even when nodes are running non-GPU workloads concurrently. Executing srun -n X where X is greater than total CPU in entire cluster

Hi there, SLURM community, I swear I've done this before, but now it's failing on a new cluster I'm deploying. We have 6 compute nodes with 64 cpu each (384 CPU total). When I run `srun -n 500 hostname`, the task gets queued since there's not 500 available CPU. Wasn't there an option that allows for this to be run where the first 384 tasks execute, and then the remaining execute when resources free up? Jobs showing running but not running

Hi All, I'm managing a cluster with Slurm, consisting of 4 nodes. One of the compute nodes appears to be experiencing issues. While the front node's 'squeue' command indicates that jobs are running, upon connecting to the problematic node, I observe no active processes and GPUs are not being utilized. Does anyone know whether a framework of sorts exists that allow to change certain SLURM configuration parameters provided some conditions in the batch system’s state are detected and of course are revert if the state became the old one again? (To be more concrete: We like to raise or unset maxjobPU to run as much small jobs as possible to allocate all nodes as soon as certain threshold of free nodes are available and of course some other scenarios) Many thanks in advance. Hello, *Background :* I am working on a small cluster that is managed by Base Command Manager v10.0 using Slurm 23.02.7 with Ubuntu 22.04.2. I have a small testing script that simply consumes memory and processors. I run my test script, it consumes more memory than allocated by Slurm and as expected it gets killed by OOM killer. Hello, My name is Mihai and a have an issue with a small GPU cluster manage with slurm 22.05.11. I got 2 different output when I'm trying to find out the name of the nodes(one correct and one wrong). slurmdbd archive format

My organization needs to access historic job information records for metric reporting and resource forecasting. slurmdbd is archiving only the job information, which should be sufficient for our numbers, but is using the default archive script. In retrospect, this data should have been migrated to a secondary MariaDB instance, but that train has passed. The format of the archive files is not well documented. Does anyone have a program (python/C/whatever) that will read a job_table_archive file and decode it into a parsable structure? Building Slurm debian package vs building from source

We have several nodes, most of which have different Linux distributions (distro for short). Controller has a different distro as well. The only common thing between controller and all the does is that all of them ar x86_64. I can install Slurm using package manager on all the machines but this will not work because controller will have a different version of Slurm compared to the nodes (21.08 vs 23.11) If I build from source then I see two solutions: - build a deb package - build a custom package (./configure, make, make install) Building a debian package on the controller and then distributing the binaries on nodes won't work either because that binary will start looking for the shared libraries that it was built for and those don't exist on the nodes. So the only solution I have is to build a static binary using a custom package. Am I correct or is there another solution here?

memory high water mark reporting

Hi, We are trying out slurm having been running grid engine for a long while. In grid engine, the cgroups peak memory and max_rss are generated at the end of a job and recorded. It logs the information from the cgroup hierarchy as well as doing a getrusage call right at the end on the parent pid of the whole job "container" before cleaning up. With slurm it seems that the only way memory is recorded is by the acct gather polling. I am trying to add something in an epilog script to get the memory.peak but It looks like the cgroup hierarchy has been destroyed by the time the epilog is run. Where in the code is the cgroup hierarchy cleared up ? Is there no way to add something in so that the accounting is updated during the job cleanup process so that peak memory usage can be accurately logged ? I can reduce the polling interval from 30s to 5s but don't know if this causes a lot of overhead and in any case this seems to not be a sensible way to get values that should just be determined right at the end by an event rather than using polling. Slurm not allocating correct cgroup cpu ids in srun step (possible bug)

Hi, At our site we have recently upgraded to Slurm 23.11.5 and are having trouble with MPI jobs doing srun inside a sbatch'ed script. The cgroup does not appear to be setup correctly for the srun (step_0). As an example $ cat /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/slurm/uid_11000..../job..../cpuset.cpus 0,2-3,68-69,96,98-99,164-165 $ cat /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/slurm/uid_11000..../job..../step_0/cpuset.cpus 0,2,68,96,98,164 The sbatch is allocated a range of cpus in the cgroup. However, when step_0 is run, only some of those CPUs are in the group. I have noticed that it is always the range which is missing, ie 2-5 only 2 is included, 3,4,5 are missing. This also only happens if there are multiple groups of cpus in the allocations. ie only 1-12 would be fine, however 1-12,15-20 would result in 1,15 only. The sbatch also seems fine, with step_batch and step_extern being allocated correctly. This causes numerous issues with MPI jobs as they end up overloading cpus. We are running our nodes with threading enabled on the CPUs, and with cgroups and affinity plugins. I have attached our slurm.conf to show our settings. Our /etc/slurm/cgroup.conf is ConstrainCores=yes ConstrainDevices=yes ConstrainRAMSpace=yes ConstrainSwapSpace=yes We have turned on logging at debug2 level, but I haven't yet found anything useful. Happy for a suggestion on what to look for. Is anyone able to provide any advice on where to go next to try and identify the issue? Regards, Ashley Wright

Running slurm on alternate ports

Hello all, for testing purposes, we would like to run slurm on ports different from the default values. No problems in setting this up. But how does one tell srun/sbatch/etc what the different port numbers are? I see no command line options to specify a port or an alternate configuration file. Thank you, Alan
